Earthquake Awareness Competition

Calling all Idaho students (K-12)! Do you have an interest in geography? Have you ever wondered how earthquakes happen? Take part in the Idaho Office of Emergency Management’s (IOEM) Earthquake Awareness competition – a statewide contest for Idaho youth to research and share more about earthquakes and how to prepare for one. Students will compete with peers around the state for recognition and prizes!

Competition Guidelines

  • Create a presentation based around earthquake awareness and creative ideas that assist the public to showcase preparing for, mitigating against, responding to, and recovering from earthquakes within Idaho.
  • Students can work solo or in a team of two, along with a teacher mentor
  • Students are asked to create a poster or diorama

To participate, submit your completed presentation in PDF or JPEG format to scleverley@imd.idaho.gov. Please use the subject line: “Earthquake Awareness Competition Entry – [Your Name]” and include the following details in your email:

  • Participant’s age
  • Grade
  • School
  • Hometown

You can submit your presentation by taking a photo, scanning it, capturing a screenshot of a digital presentation, or sharing a link. Just make sure it’s clear and easy for the judges to read.

The deadline to submit an entry is Wednesday, October 23, 2024 at 5:00p p.m. MT

The competition is open to all Idaho K-12 students. You must reside in the State of Idaho to enter. 

We encourage participation from homeschoolers. You must be homeschooled within Idaho to participate.

Entries will be judged and scored in five criteria sections:

  1. The topic is clearly identified and focused on earthquakes within the borders of Idaho.

  2. Overall presentation is effective and informative regarding the topic of interest within the respective age groups of the participants.

  3. Application of an earthquake-based topic is utilized and the participant is reporting accurate information.

  4. All work is original, and any non-original images, graphics, and/or information are clearly and correctly cited.

  5. Presentation of the project is appealing

Participants can earn up to a total of 50 points. 

Yes. Prizes for the Fall 2024 Earthquake Awareness Competition will be announced at a later date.
